Fibromyalgia

Much of the credit of myofascial trigger point therapy goes to White House Physician, Janet G. Travell, MD and aerospace physician, David G. Simons, MD.  There is, however, more to the story.

Trigger points have been found and documented for some time now, and it is only recently that the general public is being made aware of the existence of referred pain from skeletal muscle.

This piece of history is about Dr. Janet Travell, MD (1901—1997), who contributed much of her life to the research, education, and treatment of myofascial pain.  This history will take you briefly through her career as well as her collaboration with Dr. David G. Simons.  Also, included in this piece, are some Travell’s quotes that are very practical and enjoyable.  Dr. Travell is the reason that the National Association of Myofasial Trigger Point Therapists exists today.

Another piece of history dedicated to Dr. Janet Travell, MD exists at The George Washington University in the Department of Special Collections – Gelman Library.  These papers were donated to the library in 1998 by her daughters, Virginia Powell Street and Janet Powell Pinci.  A link to the exhibit that chronicles Dr. Travell’s years as a physician is included with this excerpt.  Click below to view.
