Myofascial Therapy
When using this Symptom Checker, ask these questions:
- Do you have muscle pain? Otherwise known as Myofascial Pain Syndrome, Fibromyalgia or area-specific pain or discomfort?
- Do you have weakness in your muscles?
- Do you have loss of ROM or Range Of Motion in a joint or area of your body?
- Have you been told you have tendonitis, bursitis, myositis, or any of the "-itis" type words?
- Have you been told you have Fibromyalgia?
- Have you been told you have Cervicalgia? Thoracalgia? Lumbalgia?
- Do you have Headaches?
- Do you have neck pain/sensation, Shoulder pain/sensation?
- Do you have hip, thigh, knee, shin or foot/ankle pain or sensation?
If you answered YES to any of the above questions, and you don't have other orthopedic or disease-based conditions, your problem could be caused by Myofascial Trigger Points (MTrPs ) in your muscles.
Use our Symptom checker to
- learn about which muscles might be causing your problems. (Click on the body area that corresponds with your problem area), then click on a more detailed section on the next screen.
You will then have a list of muscles that could cause problems in that specific area.
- Now you will have a simple road map to follow to understand which muscles could be causing your pain or sensation or loss of ROM or loss of strength.
Do you have a specific problem like: weakness going down stairs or pain/sensation in your abdomen?
Do you have nausea, excessive lacrimation or watering of your eyes? Menstrual pain, sensation of urinary urgency or pelvic floor pain ...etc?
- Then click on the "Symptoms" tab in the checker site and you will find a list of specific areas and symptoms. When you click, you will be given a list of muscles that could contribute to the problem/condition/sensation.
Do you know the name of your problem muscle?
- If you already know the name of your problem muscle, Click on the "Muscles" Tab and then click on the muscle to learn more about it.
Getting rid of these problem trigger points:
- You can look for a NAMTPT member in your area. Our members are experts in treating and eliminating myofascial trigger points . Click on our "Find A Therapist" feature.
- Or do it yourself!
- When you begin your own self-care or home care trigger point pressure release, press on the
"X" marks in the illustrations. The red pattern is the "Referred pattern" of sensation that can be caused by the trigger points in that muscle (the "X").

Trigger Points that can be found in the Gluteus Medius Muscle;
The "x" indicates most probable location of trigger point complex, taut dense fiber bundles in the gluteus medius muscle. The stippled red pattern is the referral pattern of pain, or sensation, or tingling, or sorenes, or weakness that can be caused by these dense areas in the muscle fibers.
**Underlying perpetuating factors must be remediated for full elimination of these (and all trigger points). Those factors can include; poor habitual sitting, driving, sleep posture. Mis-fitting furniture or very soft bed. Poor foot wear choices, hyperpronation of the foot/ankle, chronic dehydration....etc.
**Home care trigger point pressure self-release techniques must be used along with practitioner provided hands-on treatment for ALL MUSCLES.
